As the old adage goes, “Elections Have Consequences.”
Last night, The Ruling Elitist Party of the People’s Republic of Cheltenham, more commonly known as the Cheltenham Township Board of Commissioners, gathered for their monthly meeting as the Public Affairs Committee. Their major agenda item was to begin the process of making a law that would restrict the voices of our citizens at every future public meeting.
Four short months ago, we went to our polling places to elect Comrades Areman, Lewis, Chirico, Norris & Brockington as Township Commissioners. If we knew last November their most pressing matter was to restrict our First Amendment Rights would we elect them now? I think not.
All five of these recently elected officials initially pledged to support the first step of the Muzzling Act only later to reverse their pledges. Instead, they voted to “table” the agenda item for another month and reconsider it at April’s Public Affairs Committee meeting.
What they failed to consider in leading up to this flawed attempt was the collective resolve of our fellow freedom-loving Americans. Only a handful of Cheltenham Citizens attended this sham of a meeting but collectively we were able to provide enough resistance to at least delay this process.
By all appearances, this initiative was spearheaded by our Township Solicitor (solicitor is code for lawyer), Edward Diasio. Mr. Diasio is a partner with Municipal Law Firm Wisler Pearlstine. Mr. Diasio had the audacity to argue that restricting public comment would lessen the Township’s and/or Commissioner Board’s legal liability. Twisted logic. Since Mr. Diasio is a “hired hand,” our elected officials have the latitude to relieve him of his duties.
What will happen next? Does our Board of Commissioners possess the requisite skills to recognize our fellow citizens will not stand for any Muzzling Act? Or, will they double-down their efforts, regroup and use April’s Public Affairs Committee meeting to renew the process.
I am calling on all fellow Cheltenham Citizens to stand resolute and never let our government restrict our speech or to abridge our right to petition our government for redress of grievances.
Make Cheltenham Great Again!!
