Today marks the 81st anniversary of the D-Day Invasion. Known as Operation Overlord, the outcome of this fateful day ultimately led to Allied victory on the Western Front. Over 10,000 Allied casualties were incurred during this operation, including over 4,400 soldiers who never made it home.
In reflecting upon D-Day, I find myself searching for a word (or words) to describe how our young warriors must have felt knowing they faced a high probability of not returning home all while carrying out their mission anyway. Is it Bravery? Is it Courage? Is it Heroism? Is it Patriotism? Is it all of the above (and more)? If only they knew the clock would fast-forward decades from then and phrases like “safe spaces” would creep into our lexicon. There were no safe spaces on that day.
We should all Count our Blessings every day that these heroes defended and protected the Freedoms and Liberties we so cherish. We will never forget!
