WHY VOTER TURNOUT IS IMPORTANT

ELECTION DAY 2017 is approaching quickly.  There are about 10 days left to go and counting down.

Some might say that these off-year elections don’t mean that much and what’s the point of going to the polls to vote.  The evidence is the consistently low voter turnout.  If this year follows the usual pattern, there will be about 7,000 Cheltenham Voters heading to the polls.  And if the usual outcome takes place, the final tallies will be about 5,500 to 1,500 for the winning candidates, which are always Democrats.

But this year is different.  There is unrest in Cheltenham Township among the electorate, mostly aimed at the School Board.  The current School Board has sat back and watched as our once-proud School District continues on a downward spiral.  School Property Taxes are at the highest levels of all time & will increase again this year.  The current debt on the School Board’s Balance Sheet is at the highest level of all time & they are seriously contemplating an increase of another 60 Million Dollars.  All of this fiscal mismanagement comes at a time when our academic performance continues to decline.  To make matters worse, the School Board has just hired a family member for a highly paid administrative position.  It reminds me of a former colleague of mine who used this expression when describing one of our competitors, “you can buy better but you can’t pay more.”

For the first time in a long time, several of our candidates, myself included, are receiving support from disaffected Democrats who want to send a message to their party.  As such, our vote totals should increase this year.  But will it be enough?  Under normal circumstances, we would have to swing over 2,000 votes away from registered Democrats just to realize a razor-thin margin of victory.  That may be possible, but not very likely.  So we need to get all 4,000 registered Republicans to the polls.  By doing so, we will have to swing 750 votes away from registered Democrats.  Much better odds.

Can we count on you to help?

I hope to see you at the polls on Nov. 7th.
